History of the Wine Route
The Alsace Wine Route is France’s oldest wine route. Opened in 1953, it stretches for more than 170 kilometres through 73 municipalities in the Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin departments. White wine is its symbol.
It is an essential visit for anyone wishing to discover Alsace. Travelling along it reveals the history of its villages. We invite you to explore these places and enjoy time with family or friends.
Discover the Wine Route
France’s most famous wine route proudly displays its medieval castles, Renaissance-style houses and flower-lined village streets with their distinctive Alsatian charm. Alsace is a land of traditions and wines, offering visitors a rich and memorable experience.
Renowned for its itineraries and accessible routes, the Wine Route invites you to explore the region and its vineyards. Beginning at the foot of the Vosges, it stretches for more than 170 kilometres through the vineyards, with a more isolated section around Wissembourg in northern Alsace.
Between Strasbourg and Colmar, we also invite you to discover Mont Sainte-Odile and Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle.
Haut-Kœnigsbourg and Sainte-Odile
Haut-Kœnigsbourg is a medieval castle in Orschwiller, Bas-Rhin. Its name comes from the German Hochkönigsburg, meaning ‘the king’s high castle’, and was adapted into French.
Above the mountains and forests of the Vosges stands Sainte-Odile Monastery, founded in AD 700. Saint Odile is the patron saint of Alsace. Today, the site is a popular place of pilgrimage and sightseeing for visitors and local people seeking a peaceful retreat.
